If you have the misfortune of stumbling across this, consider yourself unlucky. My name is Mrs Helfy and this little corner of the Internet is my blog, Cocktails and Cats.
Who is Mrs Helfy?
[Black and white. Ooh, moody.]
I’m an anxiety-ridden feminist metalhead, married to a bearded alternative DJ and living in Brighton. As the title of my blog might suggest, I have an intense passion for cocktails (I think I was a Pornstar Martini in a previous life) and am a crazy cat lady. I am also obsessed with food and travelling. My husband and I are owned (yes, owned) by four cats and two cornsnakes.
Let’s break it down a bit:
- Mental health:
A few years ago, I was diagnosed with severe depression and anxiety. It is something that I battle with on a daily basis and it is something that is often all-consuming. My mental health issues are part of the reason that I have decided to start this blog up. In therapy, writing all of your thoughts down is highly recommended as a coping strategy so, on a purely selfish basis, I hope that it will be beneficial to me. If anything that I write even has any remotely positive impact on anyone, BONUS! (I really doubt that this will happen. I talk the biggest pile of nonsense but A PERSON CAN DREAM.)
If you don’t like the idea of someone talking at length about intersectional feminist issues, this blog probably isn’t for you. Feminism is a huge part of who I am and it is incredibly important to me that it is looked at from an intersectional approach. As a cis white woman, I must recognise that I have a lot of privilege. I cannot speak for my trans sisters, sisters of colour, disabled sisters and non-binary folk but I can recognise their struggle and stand up for them.
I must apologise in advance if I ever speak out of turn and if I am not inclusive enough in my language. My intention is to be mindful of others’ experiences and to learn from them.
[When my mother-in-law gave me this Slipknot hoodie, I genuinely cried tears of joy.]
I have a confession: I am a massive metalhead. I don’t have the biggest musical knowledge, but I know what I like, and I like what I know (apologies for the cliché – I’m not very imaginative). There’s nothing quite like your favourite track coming on and headbanging to it in a mosh pit like a right nutter. My favourite bands include Slipknot, Rammstein, System of a Down and Metallica.
- My bearded husband:
[On our honeymoon in Japan.]
My husband, his glorious beard and I have been a happy threesome for just over four years. Last year, he made the mistake of marrying me. We first met several years ago at the alternative club night that he DJs at (Guerilla Rocks at the Pav Tav, 2nd Saturday of the month… he’d kill me if I missed an opportunity to plug it). When I first met him, I really was not fond of him at all. I actually kinda thought he was a bit of a rude wangspanner! Thankfully, as I got to know him, I still thought he was a bit wangy but he was a wang that I liked. One of the biggest things that we have in common is our taste in music, so it seemed fitting that we had a metal wedding. We had “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica as our first dance and I walked down the aisle to “Rock you like a Hurricane” by Scorpions.

Even just writing this section practically has me salivating. I have such an intense love of food that I can never truly consider myself to be in a monogamous relationship. Food is my other lover. Sorry, Mr Helfy! One of my favourite activities is eating – be that one of my husband’s delicious home-cooked meals (I cannot cook to save my life, so thank god he can!), or out at a fabulous restaurant. I love food so much that my workmates got me a restaurant voucher for my birthday last year – they know me well!
[Praça do Comércio, Lisbon, Portugal]
I recently started writing my bucket list and realised that a lot of what was on there was travel-related. Our planet is so vast and wonderful and I just want to see as much of it as humanly possible. I have been to a fair few countries but I still have so many more that I need to visit. My husband and I have been treating each other to holidays instead of birthday presents for the past couple of years which has been a great way to see the world.

Cocktails. I like them. I drink them a lot. That’s about it.
OMFG KITTIES!!! I’m a little bit obsessed with cats. As I mentioned, my husband and I are owned by four cats. Let me introduce them to you:
What can I expect from Cocktails and Cats?
My blog will most likely mainly consist of whatever happens to fall out of my brain and on to the keyboard. I have been known to be a bit opinionated, so if it’s happening, I’ll probably have an opinion on it. I believe that it is crucial to use this platform to raise awareness of important issues that are happening in the world today. I also like sharing my thoughts on films and restaurants, so it’s not all doom and gloom.
Is that it…?
Yes, that is indeed it! You can now breathe a sigh of relief.
