Virus – The Importance of Speaking Up

Music is a very powerful tool. Sometimes, it’s just therapeutic to listen to. Sometimes, it just helps to kill time. And sometimes, it can be used to get a powerful message across.

A band that I have been a fan of for a few years, but admittedly haven’t listen to that much recently, is Sonic Boom Six. If you aren’t aware of who Sonic Boom Six  (SB6) are, they’re a five-piece band from Manchester, England. Fronted by the fantastic Laila K, the band are full of energy and, importantly, they have a strong message to get across. Not only is their music excellent (it’s a massive mash-up of metal, ska, punk, dubstep… the lot), it’s also really poignant too.

They frequently speak out about injustices in the world and, when on my way to work one day, it suddenly struck me just how spot on their lyrics are. In particular, their big hit Virus is right on the money. We all have a part to play in fighting problems where we see them, and Virus lays it all out on the line. We cannot just sit back and do nothing whilst people are dying on our doorsteps. Whether it be signing a petition, or raising awareness on social media and on blog posts, or marching in the streets, or handing out food to homeless people – we cannot just sit back and do nothing. If you are able to help, it is your duty to do so. To sit back and do nothing is to be complicit. Even if it’s only something small, I urge you to take a stand. We cannot sit back and let the likes of Donald Trump and Theresa May get away with their heinous actions. We cannot let the Harvey Weinsteins of this world to continue their tirade of terror against women. Enough is enough – do your part and face up to them. Let them know that you will not put up with their sanctimonious bullshit.

And without further ado, the lyrics to Virus in full:

“It’s like a virus, and it’s coming to get you my friend
No one is immune or fit to defend
The poison in our veins that spreads as we play pretend
It’s coming to get ya!

It’s like the rising tides of polluted seas
It’s like the credit card with the hidden fees
It’s like the man that sleeps on the street tonight and when he asks us for change we avoid his eyes
It’s like the cost of sending out our troops to war
Could be the money spent on helping out the poor
It’s like the pensioner inside her council home who can’t pay for her heating and dies in her sleep alone

And I’ve seen no vaccine, only the writing on the wall
White blood cells inside our system don’t work at all
And I’ve seen no vaccine, only the writing on the wall
The writing on the wall

It’s like a virus, and it’s coming to get you my friend
No one is immune or fit to defend
The poison in our veins that spreads as we play pretend
It’s coming to get ya!

It’s like the nurse that’s working a twelve hour day
It’s like the thirty-five grand for a bottle of champagne
It’s the multi-nationals avoiding their taxes while they’re raising VAT for bailing out all the banks
It’s like the kid that’s smashing up the Cash Converter
The bonus for the bosses of the corporate merger
The way we call a quarantine for everyone else and never even realise we had the virus ourselves

It’s coming to get you my friend. It’s like a virus.”
